Ingredients
  

Pressure cooking the dhal:
  • ¼ cup moong dhal
  • 1 cup water
For grinding:
  • ¼ cup shredded coconut
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 2 dry red chilly (or more, depending upon your taste)
  • 1 tsp roasted gram
For making kootu:
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • ½ tsp urad dhal
  • few curry leaves
  • A pinch asafoetida
  • 150 gram green tomato thakkali kai
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • salt to taste

Method
 

Pressure cooking the dhal:
  1. Rinse the ¼ cup of moong dhal in water, put it inside the pressure cooker with 1 cup of water
  2. Pressure cook for 3 whistles in medium flame
  3. After pressure releases open the lid and keep aside
For grinding:
  1. In a blender jar, add 1/4 cup of shredded coconut, 1 tsp cumin, 2 dry red chilly, 1 tsp roasted gram
  2. blend it finely with little water and keep aside
For making kootu:
  1. Heat 1 tbsp of coconut oil in a pan, splutter ½ tsp of mustard seeds, then add ½ tsp urad dhal, few curry leaves, 1 dry red chilly, and a pinch of asafoetida
  2. Now add chopped green tomato (thakkali kai) saute it for 4 minutes till it gets soft
  3. Add in pressure cooked moong dhal and mix well, bring into a boil
  4. then add the ground paste and mix well
  5. bring into a boil and turn off the flame
