Method
Pressure cooking the dhal:
- Rinse the ¼ cup of moong dhal in water, put it inside the pressure cooker with 1 cup of water
- Pressure cook for 3 whistles in medium flame
- After pressure releases open the lid and keep aside
For grinding:
- In a blender jar, add 1/4 cup of shredded coconut, 1 tsp cumin, 2 dry red chilly, 1 tsp roasted gram
- blend it finely with little water and keep aside
For making kootu:
- Heat 1 tbsp of coconut oil in a pan, splutter ½ tsp of mustard seeds, then add ½ tsp urad dhal, few curry leaves, 1 dry red chilly, and a pinch of asafoetida
- Now add chopped green tomato (thakkali kai) saute it for 4 minutes till it gets soft
- Add in pressure cooked moong dhal and mix well, bring into a boil
- then add the ground paste and mix well
- bring into a boil and turn off the flame
