chayote poricha kootu | chow chow kootu Instead of making sambar with the dhal, we can make kootu for a turn. Chayote is a very healthy veggie, packed with vitamin C, folate, and vitamin K.

The word poricha means fried, Which implies frying the ingredients before grinding. Poricha kootu, even tastier than normal kootu, for making any type of kootu, edible coconut oil would be preferable as it gives a nice flavour to the dish.

This kootu will have the light consistency that you can use it as a side dish for white rice to mix with if you want it to be thick consistency to have as a poriyal, cook the dhal with 3/4 a cup of water

Let’s see how to make chayote poricha kootu | chow chow kootu

For cooking dhal,

We can cook the dhal with veggie in pressure cooker, add 1 cup of water, Pressure cook for 3 whistles

Oil for kootu: Kootu is a thick dal combined with some vegetables. Usually, kootu used to prepare with coconut oil, because coconut oil gives flavor to the dish. But we can use other oil like groundnut oil, sesame oil, or ghee for tempering. In this recipe, I have used coconut oil.

Alternatives:

If you have soaked the dhal for 15 minutes, you can cook it for 2 whistles

(Or)

We can cook in pot with veggie in medium flame for 20 minutes with 2 to 2 1/2 cup of water by covering with lid.

Let us get into the recipe of chayote poricha kootu | chow chow kootu

Cuisine: South Indian

Course: side dish

Preparation time: 10 minutes

Cooking time: 20 minutes

Serves: 4

Spice level: medium

Ingredients:

Chayote – 250 gm / 1 1/2 cup ( chopped) / half of big sized chayote

Moong dhal – 1/4 cup

Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp

water – 1cup

For roasting and grinding:

Oil / coconut oil – 1 tsp

Cumin – 1tsp

Urad dhal – 2 tsp

Dry Red chilli – 2

Coconut (shredded) – 1/4 cup

For tempering:

Oil/ coconut oil – 1 tsp

Mustard -1/2 tsp

Urad dhal – 1/2 tsp

Asafoetida – 1/4 tsp

Curry leaves few

Salt to taste.

Preparation method chayote poricha kootu | chow chow kootu :

1. Firstly, Take the chopped chayote in pressure cooker, add Moong dhal and 1 cup of water

Secondly, Cover the lid pressure cook for 3 whistles, if you have soaked the dhal for 10/15 minutes, just cook it for 2 whistles

For roasting and grinding:

2. Meanwhile, heat a pan take 1 tsp of oil, splutter cumin, add urad dhal, dry red chilli and 1/4 cup of coconut, fry it for 5 minutes. Then let this mixture to cool for 5 minutes

3. Blend this mixture into smooth paste with little water and keep aside

Making kootu:

4. After pressure releases, open the lid of the cooker, add ground paste, turmeric powder and mix well

5. You can add 1 or 2 tbsp of water if you wish ( basically kootu would be thick paste consistency)

6. Finally, pour in tempering mixture over the kootu

It is done.

Stepwise picture recipe chayote poricha kootu | chow chow kootu :

Chopping veggie:

I have taken half of chayote which is 250gm
To begin with Deseed it carefully
Secondly, Peel off
Thirdly, chop into small cubes, and keep aside

Roasting and grinding:

firstly, Heat the oil, add cumin, red chilly, urad and saute till urad dhal becomes golden
Secondly, add coconut and saute
After sauteed well, turn off the flame and cool down completely,
transfer into blender jar after it got cool
grind it into smooth paste with little water
ground into a smooth paste

Cooking:

add dhal, chopped chayote, salt, water in pressure cooker

Pressure cook it for 3 whistles in medium flame

open the lid after pressure released
chayote poricha kootu | chow chow kootu
add turmeric
And then, add ground paste

bring into boil nicely

Finally, season with mustard, urad dhal, asafoetida, curry leaves

Now the chayote poricha kootu | chow chow kootu is ready.
