
Green gram curry/ Coimbatore Pachapayiru curry is a good alternative for usual dhal and sambar. It is a tasty side dish for rice for lunch. The ingredients used here for cooking dhal as well as tempering is slightly different from the usual dhal recipe. This is a simple dish that can make it in very little time. It is a delicious lunch food for toddlers and kids. Mix up rice and this curry with some ghee or coconut oil

Green gram curry
Ingredients
To pressure cook the green gram
- 1 cup green gram
- 3 garlic cloves
- 8 shallots
- 1 tomato chopped
- ¼ tsp castor oil/ghee
- ¼ tsp turmeric powder
- 2½ cup water
- salt to taste
For Tempering:
- 1 tbsp coconut oil/ oil
- 1 tsp coriander seeds
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 green chilly chopped
- 2 dry red chilly
- ¼ tsp asafoetida
- few curry leaves
Instructions
To pressure cook the green gram:
- To begin, Wash the green gram 2, 3 times
- Heat the pressure cooker, Add the washed green gram, dry fry it till you get the nice aroma or it changes color slightly
- Add 2½ cup of water, then add shallots, garlic, tomato
- Now add ¼ tsp of castor oil.
- Put ¼ tsp of turmeric powder, mix well
- Cover the lid and pressure cook for 7 whistles
- After pressure releases, open the lid, add salt
- Mash it with a ladle
- Pour ½ cup of water mix well
For tempering:
- Heat the 1 tbsp of coconut oil in a pan
- Add coriander seeds and cumin, fry it till it becomes crisp
- Now add the chopped green chillies and red chillies
- turn off the flame, Add asafoetida and curry leaves
- Pour this tempering mixture in the green gram curry
