Chayote peanut masala | Chow chow verkadalai kootu, I got this wonderful recipe from a friend, which is easy to make a one-pot recipe. It neither take much time to cook nor many ingredients. Chayote peanut masala/ Chow chow verkadalai kootu is also a low carb dish. Those who following a low carb diet can take this as whole food by adjusting (reducing) the number of spice powders. Or else if you have it with millets/ quinoa, you can use the same quantity of spice powders as mentioned. Furthermore this would be a good side dish for all types of rice

Ingredients Method

Ingredients
  

  • ½ cup peanut (raw)(unroasted)
  • 350 gram chayote
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 green chilly
  • 1 onion(chopped)
  • 1 tomato(chopped)
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp Kashmiri red chili powder
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp garam masala powder
  • salt to taste

Method
 

  1. Firstly, take ½ cup of peanuts, pour in hot water to immerse, soak it for 30 minutes
  2. Meanwhile, secondly, wash, wipe and peel off the chayote, cut into medium-sized pieces
  3. Heat the oil in a pressure cooker, splutter mustard seeds, cumin. Add garlic and green chilly, saute
  4. Add chopped onion, fry it becomes translucent
  5. Now add chopped tomato, saute
  6. Add spice powders 1 tsp of coriander powder, 1 tsp Kashmiri red chili powder, ½ tsp of garam masala powder, ½ tsp turmeric powder
  7. Fry it for 30 seconds in low flame just to get rid off raw smell
  8. add chopped chayote and soaked peanut
  9. pour ½ cup of water, give it a mix
  10. add ½ tsp of salt now
  11. pressure cook it for 3 whistles
  12. After pressure releases, open the lid, add salt if it's needed, It is done
Stepwise Picture Recipe:
Firstly, Soak 1/2 cup of peanuts in hot water for about 30 minutes
Heat the oil in a pressure cooker, splutter mustard seeds, cumin. Garlic and green chilly
Now Add chopped onion
saute it till it becomes translucent
After the onion got sauteed well, Now add chopped tomatoes, mix well
Add in spice powders (1 tsp of coriander powder, 1 tsp of Kashmiri red chili powder, 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder, 1/2 tsp of garam masala powder
saute it in low flame for 30 seconds

After adding the spice powders, Add chopped chayote and soaked peanuts

pour in 1/2 cup of water

give it a mix
Now, add little salt (half salt) (At the end we will add the salt again)

Pressure cook it for 3 whistles
Open the lid after pressure releases
Chayote peanut masala
put some salt as needed (if needed),
finally, mix well, it’s done, Transfer it the serving bowl

Now the masala is ready. It is good side dish for all rice varieties and rotis
