So whenever you see the green tomato in the shop just buy it to try this dish. Or if you have green tomatoes in the garden use them for making kootu.

What is kootu:

Kootu is a combinatioin of a veggie and dal (toor dal, moon dal, or chana dal etc). Adding coconut-cumin-chilly paste at the end of cooking gives nice flavour to the curry. Mostly all the kootu is made with coconut oil.

Alterations:
  • If you are going to make this as semi gravy, just reduce the water level accordingly.
  • If you are going to make it as a curry, just increase the water quantity

There are a variety of kootu recipes in the blog, also easy to make.

Using oil:

Usually, for kootu recipes, coconut oil will be used, Adding coconut oil gives unique flavor and taste to the dish. but also, we can use ground oil, seasme oil, or ghee.

Ingredients Method

Ingredients
  

Pressure cooking the dhal:
  • ¼ cup moong dhal
  • 1 cup water
For grinding:
  • ¼ cup shredded coconut
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 2 dry red chilly (or more, depending upon your taste)
  • 1 tsp roasted gram
For making kootu:
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • ½ tsp urad dhal
  • few curry leaves
  • A pinch asafoetida
  • 150 gram green tomato thakkali kai
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • salt to taste

Method
 

Pressure cooking the dhal:
  1. Rinse the ¼ cup of moong dhal in water, put it inside the pressure cooker with 1 cup of water
  2. Pressure cook for 3 whistles in medium flame
  3. After pressure releases open the lid and keep aside
For grinding:
  1. In a blender jar, add 1/4 cup of shredded coconut, 1 tsp cumin, 2 dry red chilly, 1 tsp roasted gram
  2. blend it finely with little water and keep aside
For making kootu:
  1. Heat 1 tbsp of coconut oil in a pan, splutter ½ tsp of mustard seeds, then add ½ tsp urad dhal, few curry leaves, 1 dry red chilly, and a pinch of asafoetida
  2. Now add chopped green tomato (thakkali kai) saute it for 4 minutes till it gets soft
  3. Add in pressure cooked moong dhal and mix well, bring into a boil
  4. then add the ground paste and mix well
  5. bring into a boil and turn off the flame

Firstly, wash the tomatoes and cut into small pieces

Keep aside for later use
For grinding:

Firstly, In a blender jar, add 1/4 cup of shredded coconut, 1 tsp cumin, 2 dry red chilly, 1 tsp roasted gram

blend it finely with little water , keep aside for later use

For making kootu:

Heat 1 tbsp of coconut oil in a pan, splutter ½ tsp of mustard seeds, then add ½ tsp urad dhal, few curry leaves, 1 dry red chilly, and a pinch of asafoetida

Once all the spices we added got tossed well, now, Add chopped tomato and saute

saute for a while (4 minutes of sauting is enough)

Add 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder and salt, mix it

cover the pan with lid, cook it low flame for 2 minutes

After 2 minutes, open the lid, Now add in pressure cooked moong dhal, mix well

Bring into a boil

Then add the ground paste and mix well

bring into a boil and turn off the flame, Serve with rice and rotis

  • Adjust the spice level according to your taste. Also, the spice level of this kootu recipe would be medium in this recipe.
