aval payasam | poha kheer | atukula payasam is payasam or kheer made with aval or poha. In this recipe, I have used thick aval. and dates for sweetness. You can use thin poha or aval, but you cannot get the grainy texture of poha or aval as we get using the thick aval. Among all other payasam recipes, This is the one that is prepared within 15 minutes. And also it is considered healthier than other payasam. For Gokul Ashtami, this payasam will be turned into a good neivedhyam as it has aval or poha. Whenever we want to make a quick dessert at home, this will be done in 10 -15 minutes. Because it doesn’t need any soaking, pre-pressure cooking, or anything.
Instead of dates, you can add 1/4 cup jaggery or sugar. If you are adding jaggery, you can melt it with 1/4 cup of water, and strain straight away into the kheer. For a change, you can add a tsp of rosewater or 2 drops of rose essence instead of cardamom powder. Using full cream milk makes the kheer smooth and creamy, So I prefer full cream milk to make this payasam

Ingredients
for grinding:
- 1 cup dates counted 40 numbers
- 1 cup milk
For making aval payasam:
- 1 tbsp ghee
- 1 tbsp cashews
- 1 tbsp raisins
- ½ cup thick poha / aval
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup water
- 3 tbsp sugar
- ¼ tsp cardamom powder
Instructions
for soaking and grinding:
- In a bowl, take 1 cup of dates and 1 cup of hot milk, soak it for 20 minutes
- In a blender jar, take soaked dates
- Blend into a smooth paste and keep aside
For making aval payasam:
- Heat 1 tbsp of ghee in a pan, roast 1 tbsp of cashews and 1 tbsp of raisins, and take off
- with the same oil in the pan, roast 1/2 cup of poha or aval for 3 minutes in low flame till it turns crisp
- Next, pour in 1 cups of milk and bring to boil for 2 minutes
- Now add in the ground paste, mix well
- pour in 1 cup of water
- Add 3 tbsp of sugar
- bring into a boil,
- Next, add in ¼ tsp of cardamom powder and mix well
- Finally, drop the fried cashew and raisins and mix well. Its done, serve warm or normal room temperature or chilled
